Countertop Care Guide: Do's & Don'ts for Quartz, Granite, and Natural Stone

Your countertops are an investment — with the right care, they’ll look beautiful for years to come. Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you protect and maintain Quartz, Granite, and other Natural Stone surfaces.

✅ QUARTZ Countertops – Do's

  • Use soap & water daily: Wipe with a soft cloth and mild dish soap.
  • Try a spray bottle mix: Fill with warm water + a drop of dish soap for easy cleaning.
  • Use gentle cleaners: Windex, 409, or Green Works are okay.
  • Wipe spills quickly: Especially wine, tea, coffee, or acidic items.
  • Use microfiber cloths: Keeps the surface streak-free and scratch-free.
  • Always use a cutting board: Quartz is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof.
  • Use trivets & heat pads: Quartz can suffer from heat damage.

❌ QUARTZ Countertops – Don'ts

  • Don’t use bleach, oven cleaners, or abrasive pads.
  • Don’t cut directly on the surface.
  • Don’t place hot pans or pots directly on the counter.

✅ GRANITE Countertops – Do's

  • Clean spills right away: Especially acidic or oily substances.
  • Use granite-safe cleaners: Or warm water with a soft cloth for daily cleaning.
  • Use coasters under drinks: Protects from etching and staining.
  • Use cutting boards: Prevent dull knives and scratches.
  • Place hot pots on trivets: Heat can damage the sealer.
  • Test and reseal as needed: Usually every 1–3 years. Do a water test to be sure.
  • Use polish monthly: Boosts shine (optional).

❌ GRANITE Countertops – Don'ts

  • Don’t use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemicals.
  • Don’t let spills sit — especially wine, coffee, or oils.
  • Don’t use abrasive pads or cleaners.
  • Don’t sit or stand on countertops: It can cause cracks.
  • Don’t store oils, lotions, or cleaners directly on the stone.

✅ NATURAL STONE (Marble, Quartzite, Soapstone, etc.) – Do's Know your stone’s needs: Some are more porous than others (e.g., marble).

  • Wipe daily with soft cloth + warm water.
  • Use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards.
  • Seal regularly if needed: Especially for porous stones like marble or quartzite.

❌ NATURAL STONE – Don'ts

  • Don’t use acidic or citrus-based cleaners.
  • Don’t clean with vinegar or lemon.
  • Don’t use rough scrubbers or scouring pads.
  • Don’t ignore resealing schedules (if applicable).
